Sex sells photos

About a week ago I attended the 2009 Summer Solstice Parade in Fremont, WA to take photos with the Seattle Flickrites. In case you don't know, the main attraction of the parade are the naked bicyclists that join the parade every year with their colorful painted bodies as a way to display their joy for freedom, and openness.

I took 500+ pictures and spent 2 days reviewing what to post, what not to post. I ended up posting close to 100 pictures (yeah, I know), because it was so much fun!

But the most interesting fact was the stats on my Flickr account:

1,471 views in the first 24 hours!!!

Sadly, the number of fav'ed photos and comments wasn't as favorable, but I can understand. Nobody wants you to know that they were looking at pictures of naked people -sigh-.

So I told my wife: "honey, from now on I am only photographing naked people."

Peace :-)

I don't think it's necessarily the sex but the people that draws the views in. Naked or not the pictures of colorful, interesting people are fun to see:-). CP

Hey Rumi! Nice to see you have been dedicating yourself so hard to photography. I have been very impressed by how much you have advanced. Your Flickr site is full of good stuff. It's good also to know you have been traveling around and finding interesting things to shoot and keep. Keep up the good work! Drop me a line btw I am now at the all-over-the-news Nortel. Email me, it starts with my first name, the first two letters of my last name @nortel.com.

Thanks CP, I think I agree with you in that people love to see people because they feel identified with a smile or a grin.

My point here was that in Flickr you only get lots of visits if your photos are interesting enough, in which case the visits come with an equally proportionate number of comments/faves.

In this case the proportion was disproportionate! Close to 3,000 visitors in the course of a week, and very little comments, I think it's because sex and nudity are still a bit of taboo around this corner of the world.
